Doug has been a part of the Guild of Wrought Iron Craftsmen of Wessex or the Wessex Guild for many years. He had the honour of joining the committee of The Wessex Guild at the AGM in November 2018 and is overjoyed at joining such a collection of highly skilled and passionate people dedicated to the advancement of the craft of the blacksmith.

The Wessex Guild is a dedicated group of individuals coming together for a common cause, the craft of blacksmithing. The Guild is comprised of core members who, by utilising all of their differing skill sets aim to promote and develop the craft of the blacksmith. Be you a hardened professional or the weekend hammerer.
One of the most important mission statements is to aid those who have a thirst for knowledge and a clear passion and skill for the craft. Every member of the Wessex Guild is open to giving advice and giving direction to those who ask. To this aim there are courses available, ranging from beginners classes to master classes. Some of the master classes such as the dissimilar metal classes held by Ches Chesco are priceless, this man is one of the true masters of dissimilar metal forging and they just don't teach it anymore!
With this said, the Wessex guild are looking to the future! The future of the craft is as always in the young and it is these people that we ourselves look to for inspiration and those that we want to help. There are at this moment in time two bursaries available to those who are brave enough to accept. I say brave enough, because as a crafts person, when you make a piece, you lay yourself open.....to everyone! All we ask is that you do your best, you take a chance and submit and show us who you are!! We can't wait!
There are at the moment, two bursaries available to aspiring blacksmiths awarded by The Wessex Guild.
These are The Frank Day Memorial Trophy with an award of £250 and The Richard Jones Bursary with an award of £200.
There were no takers for either of these bursaries last year, so they have both been rolled over!!! That means a total of £500 for the Frank Day Trophy and £400 for the Richard Jones Bursary.
Come on people what are you waiting for!?
The Guild wants to give you this money! All we ask is that for the Frank Day Trophy that you have three years or less experience as a Blacksmith and that you enter a piece in one of the designated shows.
For the Richard Jones Bursary, now this one is difficult! We would like you to..............write to us, yes, write to us, that is it. The award is given to an 'UP AND COMING' smith who in the opinion of the committee, best describes how the money would be of benefit in furthering their Blacksmith career.
For full terms and conditions and all the information required for both of these bursaries, please visit The Blacksmiths Guild website on the link below and go to the competitions and bursaries page.
